In Nostalgia, there is evidence that the narrator is male, since it’s referred as a “he”. In both readings, we catched a sense of desire for freedom, a desire to build a unique history throughout dreams. Thus, the act of dreaming is understood as a form of privilege that allows the narrators to act as the creators of both private and collective worlds. In both Cristina Rivera Garza’s Nostalgia and in Cristina Peri Rossi’s The Threshold, a male partner dreams and in doing so abandons his female partner. This is just a small fraction of the horrors the natives had to deal with when foreigners came and claim our land as theirs. In fact, it was the perfect excuse to abuse the indians if they refused to adopt the religion, the Spanish were legally oblied ‘by God’ to punish them, and we know by now what those punishes may be: slavery, physical violence, snatch of their properties or resources, the list goes on… I would dare to say that the requerimiento was the perfect ideology to exploit natives and America’s natural resources. The indian’s requirement in the times of the Colonial era was to adopt the catholic faith as their main religion, and the Holy Church was obviously in favor. The word “requerimiento” literally translates to requirement, which we can understand as a thing we have to do in order to achieve a certain goal or order. In his text, Galeano mentions the concept “requerimiento”, which will be explained in the following paragraph: I think none of us can fully understand what that horror was… The author enfatized about the horror of the Spanish rule during this time. This text by Eduardo Galeano is focused on a certain perspective regarding the Colonization of the New World in the 1500’s.
